Walking the Ridgeway: Overton Hill to Barbury Castle

The Ridgeway - Overton Hill to Barbury Castle

I completed this section over different occasions. You begin by heading north from Overton Hill, up along chalky slopes. Get used to the chalk, as it will be your companion for much of the journey!

The ancient stone circles of Avebury soon appears on your left, as well as stunning views out over Wiltshire. As you progress you see numerous Sarsen Stones at Fyfield down - these large stones are glacial deposits and a quick detour off the Ridgeway will lead you to fields littered with them.

Farming on the Ridgeway
As the Ridgeway passes along much farmland, you may see farming activity

The path ascends and descends gently across chalky ground, with commanding views to both sides of the path. You then reach Hackpen Hill, crossing the road, and continuing on to follow the Ridgeway passing large tree outcrops along the way.

You eventually come round to see the hilly mounds of Barbury Castle ahead.
