Walking the Ridgeway: Wendover to Ivinghoe Beacon

The Ridgeway – Wendover to Ivinghoe Beacon (12 miles)

This walk was a hard one! Feet were in a lot of pain, so I was relying heavily on my walking pole!

Coming out of Wendover you had south along a river and then through long stretches of beautiful woodland.

Seeing a Ridgeway sign, I was reminded I'm close to the finish line. Pressing on I avoided a large herd of cattle with calves at Chivery Hill Hall Farm and meet group of young walkers in north Hill woods, who were keen to get out of the woods and onto a main road (although not much chance of that on the Ridgeway!).

After passing through Hastoe and entering Tring Park you follow an amazingly straight woodland path with sculptures and an obelisk.

Going on, I walked to Tring station which then became a bit difficult to find the path! Walking along Grim’s Ditch once again, an old chalk pit reservoir is visible down below.

As I walked around Pitstone Hill, I met Mum and Dad who had come to greet me and kindly carried my bag for a short distance! Leaving my pack at the car I sped off to enjoy the last few miles (feeling incredibly light!) I was reminded of the hobbits ascending Mount Doom as I went up and over the stunning Step Hill!

As I emerged around the Hill the beacon was in sight. I enjoyed the last ascend up the chalky slopes until I at last reach the beacon! What an achievement. I had made it!
