Whilst on a recent walk across the Ridgeway in Wiltshire, I deviated off the main trial onto a public footpath and headed to an area known as Fyfield Down Nature Reserve. It was an amazing place to explore, and what struck me most was the enormous amounts of boulders scattered all over the place.
According to the sign on the entrance to the reserve, natural events had created dry valleys with spectacular quantities of these "sarsen stones".
They now support rare and unusual lichens:
